A week later and we are still amazed at how the Republicans in Congress pulled it off. They held the economy hostage, won some cheap political points, and all of us will spend the next decade paying the ransom as government programs — $900 billion over 10 years in the first round — are slashed and the recovery is put at risk.

Has the tea party peaked? Republican lawmakers affiliated with the upstart anti-tax movement scored big in the nerve-racking debt-ceiling debacle, but the victory left enough hard feelings to feed the movement’s ultimate defeat.

To quote an old Chicago White Sox slogan from the 1980s, their achievement was a case of “winning ugly.”

With the nation’s credit rating in the balance, the tea partiers seized the normally routine matter of raising the nation’s debt ceiling and held it hostage, gangsta-style: Cut government spending our way, they reasoned, and nobody gets hurt.

ANYTHING GOES

‘A policy for everything, and everything within its policy…’

Such profound thoughts are inevitable when Oso, El Constitutionalista Suprema, puts his mind to it. It is a fine day (once again) in The Forest de los 1000 y Un Nombres. Oso finds himself swinging between two trees, alive and kicking. A nearby collection of empty beer bottles testifies as to his state of high alert. ‘Life is good’, he thinks. He shifts in the hammock, trying not to fall out, as he reaches for another bottle. ‘Let’s see, what is my policy towards the consumption of beer? Drink it while you can?’

It occurs to him, Oso, that there is something semi-important pending in his agenda – and having to do with ‘policies’. Was it that insurance policy against hunters? No, that was paid up. Was it the insurance against cave fires? No, he had let that lapse years ago. Ah! – political policies…and that package that arrived about a week ago: The Nine were being summoned – and he, Oso, is one of the Nine. Continue reading
